The Promise of a New Year!

The new year is full of promise and resolutions. That being the case, this is the perfect time to get started with something you may have been been putting off, such as health and wellness. It’s been said that people who make a resolution for the new year are over ten times more successful in keeping that promise than if the goal was set any other time of year. So let’s get started with some long awaited self-improvement!

Varicose veins affect nearly 1 in 22, or 12.2 million people in the USA alone. The condition is  common in women with over 40% of women in their 50’s suffering from some sort of venous disorder. If left untreated, the condition could lead to pain, ulcers, blood clots and bleeding. Fortunately, this condition is both treatable and also, while not completely preventable, there are ways to slow the process down through attention and fitness.

Here are some tricks to keeping those pesky veins at bay:

Keep Moving: Exercise is the best way to maintain healthy body mass and blood flow in your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, improving your circulation and muscle tone can reduce your risk of developing varicose veins or getting additional ones.

Watching your weight: Because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body, by maintaining a healthy weight, you can help relieve some of the pressure that some extra pounds might create in the lower extremities.

Eat a low-sodium, high-fiber diet: Eating high-fiber foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, like bran, reduces the chances of constipation, which can contribute to the accumulation of varicose veins. Eating less salt can help by reducing the swelling that commonly accompanies varicose veins.

Change your position regularly: Changing your standing or sitting position regularly (crossing the other leg, or shifting weight) will help maintain circulation and stay the growth and possibly even help prevent new varicose veins from forming.

The beginning of a new year is a great time to focus inward and set some goals for yourself.
