Bulging Veins

Bulging veins are not only a cosmetic issue, but often an indicator of a larger underlying issue.

Bulging veins are not only a cosmetic issue, but often an indicator of a larger underlying issue. Venous insufficiency, varicose veins and thrombophlebitis are three major causes for bulging veins. Arteries have their own pumping mechanisms, our veins, however, rely on our own calf muscles to create the contractions necessary to open them. However, when swelling is present, the valves become incontinent, so instead of the blood flowing up properly, gravity pulls it back down, causing it to pool in the lower leg, which then increases the pressure in the vein. This pressure and buildup are what lead to the appearance of bulging veins, which if left untreated, can ultimately lead to a multitude of other conditions.
